Next academic year https://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/blog/2018/06/22/next-year/ Fri, 22 Jun 2018 13:23:16 +0000 http://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/?p=2238 Another academic year is over, but already generating ideas for teaching during next year.

GLOSSARY

Many students start instrument playing when the school starts, age 6-7. Children’s reading skills are incomplete or completely missing. Even though actual theory learning doesn’t start at that point, it’s possible to teach to a small children musical glossary through the experience. First it should be explained to a children, what does word in question mean, and he can draw it himself – picture – from the words. In addition, colors can be used. The word is also written under for an explanation. When there is enough glossary, it is possible to do a slide show with a computer and a children improvises through the glossary.

Idea: from the slideshow (presentation) a teacher can also pick for different pieces suitable descriptions.

STORY-TELLING / NUANCES

Choose a story. Fairy-tale, poem, story. Story is read in voice and at the same time voice is supported by the body: clapping, tapping, zipper, drumming, purr (cat), whatever.

Same can be done with a ready piece or improvised with an instrument.

A PIECE-BASED

Story/ tale is chosen for a piece. Text can be also pupil’s own invention, when/so that the pupil also had to analyze the piece.

Text is transferred to power-point presentation, so to get presentation. Pupil plays the “story” through. And if the story line direction changes? Improvise!

A teacher can also read the tale and according to the rhythm and nuances student plays.

A STORY-BASED

Story is worked like before. Ready piece is not necessary (only separate measures, phrases), but pupil improvises the feelings (can do it in random order).

May – June. Examinations in progress.

First year of studies is introduction to guitar: simple, characteristic pieces on one, two and more strings; melodies on treble, on bass strings; solo pieces, guitar duo with teacher. Basic skills are obtained: correct posture, sound producing; improvisation, composition (song form).

Second year covers purposeful work on technique; musicality; different form of musical pieces; improvisation, composition (song and variation form).

Third year dedicated to continue working on technique; musicality; tone; different form of musical pieces; improvisation, composition (song, variation, sonata form).

Recently my students received high marks at the exams. They had to play technical exam and after they pass it, there is a concert exam. Technical exam consisted of playing by memory different scales, chords, sight-reading (they get unfamiliar score and have to read/play notes written there almost without any preparation), accompany a random song with chords by ear. All went well. Hard work paid off (they practiced guitar during a year 15 – 30min every day).

Not all students managed to do that. Couple of students were not permitted to go to the exam, because they didn’t practice the instrument enough. They are talented, but it is not enough. For success you have to practice regularly and have the talent. Then you will become a good musician. Good news: I believe, we all are talented. Music making is our natural need. But we need to work with the talent: 95% work, 5% talent.

How much you could practice guitar:

During 1 year – 15min every days (if you did that 6 days in a row, then one day in a week could be absolutely free from guitar)

2 year – 30min

3 year – 45min

and so on.

I had several different teachers. I was lucky enough to study only with the best ones. But irresistible desire to learn and discover new, to become better every day – that what was (and is!) moving me forward. Listen to what your teachers tells you, do everything s/he tells and exercise regularly. Everything else will come.
Good luck!

RU

ET
Mai – Juuni. Eksamid on käimas.

Esimene koolitusaasta on sissejuhatus kitarri: lihtsad, karakterteosed ühel, kahel ja enam keeltel; meloodia ülemistel keeltel, bass keeltel; soolo teosed, kitarri duett õpetajaga. Omandatud põhioskused: õige positsioon, heli tekkitamine; improvisatsioon, kompositsioon (lauluvorm).

Teine aasta hõlmab sihipärast tööd mängutehnika valdkonnas; muusikaalsus; mitmesugused muusika vormid; improvisatsioon, kompositsioon (laul ja variatsioonivorm).

Kolmas aasta on pühendatud mängutehnika õppimise jätkamist; muusikalsus; toon; mitmesugused muusika vormid; improvisatsioon, kompositsioon (laul, variatsioonid, sonaadi vorm).

Hiljuti said minu üliõpilased eksamitel kõrgeid hindeid.

Muusika loomine on meie loomulik vajadus. Kuid me peame töötama oma talentiga: 95% töö, 5% talent.

Kui palju peate kitarrit harjutama kodus:

Esimesel aastal – iga päev 15 minutit (kui seda teete 6 järjestikuse päeva jooksul, siis saab üks päev nädalas võib olla kitarrist täiesti eemal)

2 aastat – 30 minutit

3 aastat – 45 minutit

Edu!

What style to choose https://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/blog/2017/07/06/what-style-to-choose/ Thu, 06 Jul 2017 21:59:31 +0000 http://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/?p=1868 Many musicians, no matter beginner or advances, ask themselves that question: “what style of music should I play?”

Communicating with recognized musicians during many years, I finally came to a conclusion. In fact, one could know one certain style very well and then a bit of other known styles.

My first musical education was strict: if you studied classical guitar, then it should be only that. In case, if someone saw you playing rock or blues, you immediately fell in their eyes and earning back your “classical” reputation was almost impossible. But that was many years ago…

Nowadays, I regularly practice jazz, bossa-nova and blues standards; I improvise and compose (in fact, both are the same thing!). All that I also teach to my students, as good as I can and share information.

What I like about jazz, is that it gives an opportunity for your imagination to fly. At the same time, you have also the needed support (what is so crucial in the beginning!) – you have a from and boundaries. For example, usually a jazz standard, let’s say if there are two guitarists, is played as next: one plays the theme and at the same time second gives an accompaniment (chords), then the first one starts improvising, while second still plays the same chords s/he played for the theme. Then the roles change: first player plays the chords and the second – improvises. Then the piece can be finished with the theme.

Usually, when you have played dozen of standards like that, improvised, you might feel a temptation to create your own music and that’s how you become a composer! 🙂
Composing helps you to get deeper into understanding what does the composer feel and what does it cost – to create a good piece. By improvising you can get to know better your instrument and become close friends with it. When you create an instant piece, improvise, there is nothing between you two. You jump into adventure and see where it brings you. Read more about improvisation online and improve it gradually and regularly.

(I have a dream to go onstage and play an improvised piece – one that I will compose right on that moment, not prepared in advance.)

To conclude, I would like to point out, that any style of music is limited with instruments, rhythms and pitches. Some people make out of those things “pop” music, others – “rock”, thirds – “classical” etc. If it is well done – it’s good! I think, that it is important to be a specialist in one certain style, because then you can develop that style and be a worthy representative and teach it to other. Being a specialist helps to preserve traditions, cherish them and give further to the next generation. There is not enough time to learn everything, but there is always time for the most important…

Study different music and styles on your instrument. Pick what you like the most and become really good in it. Good luck!

Composition for everyone https://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/blog/2016/09/19/composition-for-everyone/ Mon, 19 Sep 2016 20:28:56 +0000 http://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/?p=1542 During the last couple of weeks with my students we were creating and working on their own pieces.

Most of them picked up a guitar for the first time in their lives and now, couple of weeks later, some are already playing technically demanding atonal stuff: fingers move fast back and forth, creating interesting moods: sounds of nature (water, wind in the trees, fox chasing a rabbit), a city life (train ride, trip to school). Each one of them does interesting things.

Playing around with their own pieces-creations, improvising them (changing each time a little bit, adding and removing things) is fun and makes the music live.

Making your own music it’s like building your own castle of sand. It is nice to watch work of someone else, but it is also exciting and involving to make your own! Doing so will help to understand better creations of others (seeing and appreciating the efforts and solutions taken to complete a piece). There are many different ways in which creative process contributes to the development of children, as well as of adult.

“New Peace” https://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/blog/2015/09/16/new-peace/ Wed, 16 Sep 2015 21:01:18 +0000 http://www.dmitritimoshenko.com/?p=1112 Here is a piece from English composer John Bennett (1942) called “New Peace”.

I had an opportunity to meet this very talented jazz composer and player in person and talk to him during my trip to London few years ago, when I was invited to play a solo recital there. He showed me some of his pieces and gave as a present his CD, where was a among other his pieces was recordings of a New Peace by jazz band. I fell in love with it and imagined right away how it could sound on two guitars. It took some time to arrange it (with the help of the composer) and now I use every opportunity to play it and share it with others.

Arranged and performed by A. D.  libitum duo. Video recorded in Geneva Conservatoire Of Music.
